Things to do in and around Coffin Bay (1. National Park)

Updated: 5 days ago

  1. Coffin Bay National Park

A must for nature lovers, surfers, swimmers, sandboarders and fishermen!

The scenic drive from town to the Golden Island lookout takes around half an hour along sealed roads and leads to one of South Australia's finest beaches. Please ensure that you restrict your speed to 40km as there are emus and kangaroos all over the place.

You will pass the turnoff to Gunyah Beach around half way to Golden Island. This track leads to some great salmon fishing and sandboarding. Note that this is a serious 4WD track with rocks and then large open sand dunes. Tyres will need to be deflated prior to the sandhills. Do not drive on the beach as it is super soft!

4WD

The 4WD trail leading into the national park starts at Yangi Bay and is suitable only for experienced drivers. Be sure to check the tides, as parts of the trail become impassable during high tide. The track features rocky sections and very soft areas, so it's necessary to deflate your tyres to at least 18 psi to prevent getting stuck. Keep in mind that a rescue will cost approximately $700, so make sure you have recovery equipment with you and understand how to use it.
